The Falcon II
Crime Takes Flight

In the sizzling summer month of June, the heat was finally getting to Carl Burgess, crusading district attorney of his metropolitan city. It was the heat wave of crime that had Carl upset, and he felt that something had to be done about the rampant criminality that threatened to bring his city down. Knowing that legal niceties hamstring him, Carl embarks on a bold plan to create an alter ego--the Falcon, a bird of prey upon the evil individuals who defy the law. As the Falcon, Carl can strike at the heart of the city's crime and corruption problem.

Armed with nothing more than his trusty .45 automatic pistol and his natural athletic abilities, the Falcon set out to wage a one-man war on crime. The Falcon would only have two adventures before his time as the Falcon would end abruptly.

Comments

The Falcon had three appearances (Daring Mystery Comics #s 5-6 and Human Torch # 2), no powers, no bird gimmicks, and no subsequent post-Golden Age appearances. Like many other heroes of this time, he was an assistant district attorney who took the law into his own hands. It’s shaky logic, but it worked-at least for Mr. Scarlet, the Mouthpiece, and the Black Spider.

Comics sports a virtual aviary of heroes: eagles, hawks, robins, canaries, and falcons. During the Golden Age, there was at least one previous hero called the Falcon, as well as two Phantom Falcons and a Red Falcon. There was a also a popular adventure story and movie hero called the Falcon (modeled after the Saint).

The name Carl Burgess is probably an in-joke for Carl Burgos, Timely artist and creator of the Human Torch.
